PROPAGATION

In early summer there is still time to sow Primula malacoides for a colourful display this winter – try varieties such as ‘Bright Eyes Mixed’ which has lovely combinations of carmine, rose, white, pink and purple. Further sowings of P. kewensis and P. sinensis can also be made. Scatter the seed thinly in a shallow seedtray filled with compost. Cover them very lightly and place the seedtray in a temperature of about 61°F (16°C) to achieve germination. Since the seed is so near the surface it is important to cover the seedtray with a sheet of glass or place it inside a polythene bag to prevent it from drying out. Lay a sheet of newspaper over the seedtray and keep it away from direct sunlight. Remove this paper as soon as the seed starts to germinate and place the seedtray in a lightly shaded position. When the seedlings are large enough to be handled they need to be pricked out singly into 3½in (9 cm) pots filled with potting compost. Move them out to the cold frame to harden off.

Sow another batch of colourful cinerarias for autumn flowering. Sow thinly into a seedtray filled with seed compost and maintain a temperature of around 55°F (13°C). Prick out cinerarias sown last month when they are big enough to be handled safely. Don’t prick out too many though – it is easy to get carried away!
